Celtic design is such a contradiction.
On one hand it's playful and colourful. On the
other, so circumscribed and organized.
Perhaps this is why Bob continues to be drawn
to designs like those in the Book of Kells. He
finds layers of meaning there, and great grace,
too. Not to mention, challenging visual puzzles.
The Book of Kells dates from the
9th century, though it's only been in the last
100 years that we've come to see it as an art
book as well as a religious book. Those so-called
Dark Ages, as we continue to discover, were full
of the radiant light of artists and artisans.
Sadly, most of their work has been lost to the
friction of time.
This pattern is based on a cross in the "Portrait
of St. John with the Tools of the Scribe" from the Book of
Kells. Just as the intricate details in that manuscript –
a 13th-century historian called it "the work, not of men,
but of angels" – offer a view of that time, it's nice
to think that samplers and cross-stitch give us a small view of
a wider world.
