Around about January and February a gardener in
Canada starts getting itchy for the feel of dirt
underneath her nails. I know I do!
This old English proverb surfaced
one cold winter's eve as I perused gardening books,
feeding my need for green. This sampler celebrates
the bounty our gardens bestow.
Other uses for this pattern
The pansies would be a delightful
sight stitched above a pocket on a favourite cotton
shirt. You might consider just the word 'harvest'
and a row of the vegetables applied to the pocket
of a canvas tote bag.
Or try cross-stitching 'Tickle it
with a hoe' – plus a row of carrots, radishes
or apples – on a bookmark (what about a
Christmas stocking?) for your favourite gardener.
What about changing the
background colour to something lighter?
Joan wanted to stitch "Tickle
It with a Hoe" on a light coloured fabric
instead of a dark fabric.
She was concerned that if she used
the chosen greens for the lettering at the top
of the piece, they might fade into the new background.
She asked for alternate greens that would work
on light coloured fabric.
